Perry is the daughter Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry, a director. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (in flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. However, her parents didn't want her to pursue acting until she became an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry stated that she was shy to act when she was in high school. However, she started acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to build relationships after her transfer from Boston University. Perry was able to begin her acting career in New York after graduation, landing minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry move back to California to pursue work as a stage actress. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway together with her mom. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry made an appearance in 9 episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on ABC's thriller about politics Scandal which starred her father. This year, she got a role as a young counterpart to Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger version of Mary Cooper's character. She was able to be cast in the character despite her familial connection to the character.
